Why do stores like BestBuy and Circuit City always asks me for my name, address, and phone numbers?

Every time I go buy some electronic products from BestBuy or Circuit City, such as an iPod, why do they always ask me for my name, address, and phone numbers. What are they using those information for? Am I obligated to tell them?
